Curriculum

Basic skills teaching starts here from day one. Reading is the key to success and every child is heard to read aloud every day. A good handwriting style is encouraged and because basic maths forms part of every day’s timetable, the girls learn to handle numbers in an easy and confident way. There are short weekly tests in both spelling and mental arithmetic and the girls can earn housepoints for effort and achievement, both academic and personal.

French is introduced in Pre-prep 1 and throughout their time at Ashdell, enabling girls with an aptitude to move on to their choice of Senior School, already fluent in one foreign language.

Arts and Crafts, Science, History, Geography and R.E. are interspersed throughout the week so that the children experience variety and direction in their learning.

All the girls enjoy Ballet lessons for the three years they spend in the Pre-prep Department. The school takes a lively approach to learning from this early age, understanding that a small child’s natural curiosity can be her best teacher.

Computer literacy is vital to any child so computer awareness starts early at Ashdell and every classroom has an interactive whiteboard. IT forms a key part of a variety of teaching methods which aim to mix the best of the old and new, preparing your child for the next stage of her academic life.

Seasonal activities are aimed at FUN – there is an Easter Bonnet Parade, a Nativity play and regular music concerts. A highlight of the Pre-prep. year is the annual Crowning of the school’s May Queen. Special ‘FUN DAYS’ and more formal ‘OPEN DAYS’ are held regularly for prospective parents and pupils, with the existing girls all taking part in the fun!
