Design Technology

At Ashdell we believe that Design Technology is about developing thinking & learning skills; supporting children in their understanding of the form and function of familiar products. Design Technology prepares pupils for life in a rapidly changing world and enables them to consider the advantages and disadvantages of new technologies. It provides pupils with an opportunity to work with a variety of tools, materials, equipment, components and processes; allowing them to acquire a broad range of skills.

In the Prep Department, pupils are taught woodwork, cookery, needlework and textiles, together with a selection of Design Technology topics adapted from the QCA schemes of work: for example, pneumatic systems, links & levers and fairground ride design (motorised and non-motorised). Woodwork and Cookery are taught by outside professionals; both subjects benefit from having excellent facilities and resources. All pupils at KS2 experience at least one term of D&T with up to two double lessons per week. In the Pre-Prep Department, Design Technology skills are incorporated into other subject areas and taught by the class teacher.
